Introduction to the exhibition by curators Christine Lamothe and Nuria Enguita, followed by Anna-Eva Bergman in Spain: Comings and Goings, a lecture by Romain Mathieu
To talk about Anna-Eva Bergman’s trips to Spain is somehow equivalent to get into vacational periods. It entails understanding time outside the studio differently as well as taking it seriously (something absolutely key to understand her work) which nevertheless influenced the way in which the artist worked. These trips throughout Spain correspond to a period of evolution in Bergman’s modus operandi. This phase shows, perhaps with more intensity, the singularity of a work that today seems so contemporary and resistant to the categories of abstraction and figuration, that is, it shows an experience of the world.
Romain Mathieu is and art historian and critic. Lecturer at École Supérieure d’Art et Design in Saint-Étienne and at Université Aix-Marseille.
