«Ideas are materials. Ideas are like bricks. In art, practical questions are conceptual questions. From archives to discarded materials, I work like an archeologist, rewriting stories, transforming artifacts into sculptures. I work with a range of materials from a variety of sources, some of which come to me purely by accident and become a fertile ground for research, imagination, and aesthetic intervention. This conversation will be about my practice in general and the important function of research in my work.»
Fernanda Fragaeiro (Montijo, 1962) lives and works in Lisbon. She has exhibited individually since 1981. Her work, focusing primarily on sculpture or three-dimensionality, is deeply connected to a critique to modernism, developing into projects that have political, anthropological and social resonances. With a long history of public projects interventions and collaborations with architects, she has been regularly presenting her work in Europe, the United States of America and Latin America. She is represented in numerous public collections in Portugal, Spain, Colombia, United States of America and Austria.
